08:57 PM || Salvia 'Blue Ensign'

This Spring I bought one Salvia ‘Blue Ensign’ from A World of Salvias. The owner of this mail order place knows a lot about Salvias and has quite a collection. I bought another salvia from him but it hasn’t bloomed yet.

Here’s the photo of my blooming Salvia (click image for larger photo):

02:16 PM || Hot and humid

Needless to say, it’s so hot and nasty out that I have not had the motivation to really be amonst the gardens. I’ve taken some photos here and there and need to post those. In the meantime, I have purchased more books:

The Well-Designed Mixed Garden: Building Beds and Borders with Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals, and Bulbs

Encyclopedia of Shade Plants

Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting & Pruning Techniques

Grasses: Versatile Partners for Uncommon Garden Design

Bold and Exotic Plants

I’ve also renewed my NARGS (North American Rock Garden Society) membership. I’d like to take advantage of their seed exchange this Fall and their newsletter/book is a great read for in depth information on rock/alpine plants. This Summer has been fun reading, learning, and exchanging seeds. Now I just need to start preparing for the Fall season.

06:00 PM || Next border

We’re finally starting to get some real sun. Today is day #2 but it looks like we’ll be getting even more rain this week. I guess that’s good considering I just planted some more purchases yesterday. I picked up 2 Gauras, Salvia, Echinacea paradoxa, Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’, and two beautiful Clematis vines.

All of these new purchases are for the other border by the house. I’m starting from scratch here too since I gave away some shrubs.

02:01 PM || Peony bloomed, finally!

The Peony has finally begun to bloom This flower is absolutely beautiful. I feel so bad for this little fella, he’s currently planted in part shade and reaching for the sun. Come this Fall I’ll be relocating him to a sunnier border. I’m sure the transplant will cause for no blooming next year but at least he’ll get more sun.

09:01 AM || Recent blooms

Despite the constant rains and no sunshine some plants have bloomed. But I’m still waiting for the Peony to bloom - over a month now. Here’s some photos:

09:41 AM || Front border is done!

Well, actually one of the front borders is finally done. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been thinking of what to plant there and then I finally got around to getting a design for that area. I bought lots of part shade/sun plants and removed everything that was there.

Check it out:

09:35 AM || Finally the rains came

Our area finally got some rain after a week of predictions. It looks like this whole week it will be raining on and off, but Saturday should be beautiful. The new plants are loving the moisture and are quickly settling in. I do need to still plant some remainders and adjust some others.

I’ve also got inspired to redo the two front borders and plant heavily in the fall. I’ll spend the bringing laying out the foundation of the garden and preparing the soil.

This weekend is another plant sale, which I’ll be attending at Adkins Arboreteum. From what I hear they have a nice selection of native plants.

01:15 PM || Sun plants

This week has been very productive for me. I spent Tuesday night removing Liriope from the front island…which had become completely rampant and badly behaved! Out it goes.

Wednesday night I planted all but 2 of my sun plants:

Purple meadow sage
Dropseed grass
Wild blue indigo
Amsonia
Appalachian ruelllia
Phlox

Today or this weekend I’ll plant the native honeysuckle and peony.

05:34 PM || Starting to plant

This past weekend was very productive for me. I planted all of my shade plants and mulched two beds. Now I have the sun plants left to plant and mulch the remaining beds.

Now…when I get a chance I’ll post the photos.

And here are the photos from the front of the house. These two borders are in dire need of some design:

08:52 PM || What I've gotta work with

I've finally got around to taking photos of our front yard. The photos show the two borders and the island bed. There's not much in them but at least there's some trees and shrubs. As you can see, they're basic and need some color and work.

I'm thinking of turning the island into a butterfly/hummingbird haven. The hard part is deciding which plants to get. I'll have to start my wish list....Check out the photos:

11:50 AM || Yardwork breaks my back

I tell 'ya working around the yard can really break one's back. I finally got around to removing the nasty japanese honeysuckle from the side yard. Yucky mean stuff! That vine is very invasive and has done quite a number around the country side of the Chesapeake Bay.

Yesterday, I also got around to setting up my compost pile but the hubby deems the location inappropriate. He's worried that it's too visible. This week I hope to move it, plant some new purchases, and spread horsey poop.
