Things I want to make, eventually.

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

I have a gazillion projects swirming in my brain. GAZILLION. I need to win the lottery and devote my time to crafting, traveling the world and taking care of animals. During my long drives to work and back home, I start to daydream and think about the things I want to make and what I need to make them. Wanna see?

1. Knitted bag a la 1920’s style with beads, lots of beads! I’m thinking less floral style and more geometric. Like the Bauhaus movement, or something Art Nouveauish.

2. Thrummed mittens. I have loads of fiber that I could stuff into my mittens. I want them to be colorful using a traditional pattern. Maybe a pattern out of Folk Mittens.

3. Fair isle sweater. Yes. Please. I need to get over the fear of knitting with more than one yarn in hand.

4. A vibrant quilt with a strong ethnic base. I’m thinking Japanese quilts. I would love to make a quilt with modern lines, Japanese themes and colors. I started my research yesterday by picking up a few things, and today I found Quilt Ethnic. FABULOUS. This weekend I bought this book, Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match:

5. A beaded headdress from Diane Lane’s character in The Cotton Club. Do you see a theme here? I wish I had the wardrobe of a 1920s flapper girl.

What I can’t figure out is how I will get all of this done when I have to work! I guess working gives me the luxury to afford some of these things but still, can’t I just win the lottery?

In search of the old ways

As you can probably tell I’m in love with all things vintage. Vintage buttons, beads, books, stamps, postcards, posters, patterns, etc. Recently, I’ve come across some great resources
that I think you should check out. First, there is the Bernat book I got from a friend. I know stand back…those patterns are mine!!! Precious book. Look at those lovely patterns. ;) Click on image for larger pic.

Next up is Paper Pursuits [via], it’s simply delicious, this site is all things vintage fashion and design print collectibles. They sell vintage *sewing* patternsĀ  among other lovely things… but man those prices are a big OUCH! Then there’s the *free* antique pattern library with an area dedicated to knitting and crocheting. Oh, can’t forget Vintage Stitch-O-Rama’s Skull Stockings! This gal has many vintage resources so check out her blog.

Oh, not vintage, but classic. There is a new site for the Spinners’, Weavers’, and Knitters’ Housecleaning pages.

Knitting update

Kepler front with Pikachu

Not much has happened on this end, except I’ve finished the front for Kepler. See! Now I just need to get cracking on the back and sleeves and then I’ll be done! :-)

Things you learn when you don’t have cable TV

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Yes, it’s crazy I know! but I do have Netflix and even upped my subscription. So, I’ve been surfing more than usual and started listening to Cast On’s podcast, and learned about the recent effort by Knitting-and to create a knitting wiki! I think that’s just awesome, so great to have one key resource that we can contribute and create. Sarah is looking for CSS gurus to come up with a wiki skin. Any of you out there that can help out?

Let’s see what else have I learned…oh, yes, Craft came out with another issue and they have info backed blog! I had purchased the first issue and now I have to subscribe! I love the format of the magazine. Check out the table of contents.

Next lace project

I’ve been spinning up some very fine merino/cashmere that will soon graduate to yarn status, and then a project. Now here’s the problemo, there’s no project in mind. None. Zip. Zero. I need to find one before it graduates and lingers in the basket. I’ve started flipping through Folk Shawls (btw errata here), but I think those projects require too much yardage. Then I have two patterns from Fiddlesticks: Lacy Lattice & Kaleidoscope Wrap…these just might work. I gotta keep looking though. Maybe Icarus, Print o’ Wave…and so on.

Do you gals have any suggestions? I say around 800 yards maybe more, of this beauty.
